Washing and Caring for Hair Extensions
Washing and Caring for Extensions
Good care keeps your extensions soft, shiny and beautiful for longer. Extensions don’t receive natural nourishment from the scalp, so treat them gently and don’t use too many products.
General care
- Brush your extensions every day.
- Start at the ends and work your way up gently.
- Hold the hair near the attachment points while brushing.
- Always use a heat protectant.
- Style the hair at a maximum of 180°C.
- Never go to sleep with wet hair.
- Avoid oil and conditioner near the attachment points.
- Braid your hair loosely before bed.
Clip-in extensions
Remove clip-ins before sleeping, showering or swimming.
Wash them only when needed, for example after around 10 to 15 wears or if there is a lot of product buildup.
Washing clip-ins
- Carefully brush out the extensions.
- Wet the hair with lukewarm water.
- Gently wash from top to bottom with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo.
- Apply conditioner to the lengths and ends.
- Rinse the hair thoroughly.
- Lay the clip-ins flat on a towel and leave them to dry.
- Brush them gently only once they are dry.
Store clip-ins clean, dry and flat. This helps prevent tangles and damaged clips.
Wefts and Genius wefts
Wefts and Genius wefts stay in your hair. Wash your hair when needed. For most people, once or twice a week is enough.
Washing wefts
- Brush your hair before washing.
- Gently wash your scalp between the rows.
- Don’t rub or twist the rows together.
- Let the shampoo run through the lengths with the water.
- Use conditioner only on the lengths and ends.
- Rinse everything thoroughly.
- Gently pat your hair dry with a towel.
- Always dry your scalp and attachment points thoroughly.
Don’t leave the attachment points wet for long. This can cause tangles and a musty smell.
Have your wefts moved up in time. How often this is needed depends on how quickly your own hair grows.
Tape-in extensions
Tape-ins also stay in your hair. The adhesive strips need extra care.
Washing tape-ins
- Brush your hair before washing.
- Wash gently with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo.
- Don’t rub the adhesive strips.
- Use conditioner only from the mid-lengths to the ends.
- Avoid oil, masks and styling products near the tapes.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly.
- Pat it dry and carefully dry the tapes too.
Don’t pull on the tapes or try to reattach loose strips yourself. Contact the salon for help.
Using heat
You can blow-dry, straighten and curl your hair, but always use a heat protectant and keep the temperature below 180°C.
Keep hot styling tools away from clips, tapes and sewn-in wefts. Too much heat dries out the hair and can damage the attachment points.
Swimming
Chlorine and salt water can dry out extensions.
Going swimming?
- Braid your hair loosely.
- Wear a swimming cap if possible.
- Rinse your hair immediately afterwards with clean, lukewarm water.
- Dry the attachment points thoroughly.
Are your extensions dry or dull?
First, use fewer styling products and wash your hair carefully. Then apply a nourishing mask to the lengths and ends, but never to the attachment points.
